We hope this tutorial gives you some ideas on how to use the unique Points with Layer feature. With over 37,000 data layers and hundreds of thousands of address, the combinations are endless. These are just a handful of examples that you can use the Points with Layer feature for.
The emailed CSV will show the Census Tract, the FIPS ID, if it’s eligible for New Markets, and the rest of your address data. The confirmation sentence will now state that you are downloading “New Markets Tax Credit eligible tracts” for “CY 2015”, for your dataset, “by tracts” and in the state or location you selected. New Markets data is only available at the Census Tract level. Use the Add or Change button to find the state or area that your dataset is contained in. Select Points with Layer which should state, “NMTC Program Eligibility data for ”. We will use the CDFI Fund’s New Markets Tax Credit program under Federal Guidelines. Leaving the population numbers aside, you now have a list of all universities in Virginia and the Congressional District the school is inįinally, and probably one of the main reasons why we wanted to create the Points with Layer feature, users that want to determine which addresses in their investment portfolio are in locations that are eligible for a federal program. This file will display all the addresses in each row, while also the congressional District, the location (Virginia) which the file was generated for, and the population of district. Selecting Download CSV will send an email to you with a CSV (comma separated value) file that can opened in Excel. Select the Points with Layer option which should state, “Population data for 4-Year Colleges and Universities”. Why are you loading population data when you only care about Congressional Districts? Because the Points with Layer feature requires a data layer for it to work. Then load any data layer which has Congressional district aggregation, most Census has this aggregation, so select Population from the Demographics tab. Load 4-Year Colleges and Universities from the Education tab. In our next example, let’s say you want to find the Congressional Member who represents each university in Virginia. The file will show each high school with the school district and graduation rate for the districts. This will also save a copy of this file in your My Saved Work The confirmation sentence now states that you are downloading “graduation data” in “2009-2010” for “public schools” by “school districts” in the “state of Oregon”. In our example, Graduation Rates are only available by School Districts Select the drop down menu for a location to determine what geography (called Shaded By) to download for.

Select Points with Layers which should state, “Graduation Rate for Public Schools…”. Filter the school points so that only high schools are shown. Then add Public Schools points data also from the Education tab. On the Maps page, add Graduation Rate from the Education tab. We want to find a list of high schools which are in school districts with the highest graduation rates in Oregon. So how or why should someone use this unique feature? For our advanced GIS users, this will join an address to a geography and give the FIPS code and data for that geography. As stated on the Data Download tutorial, the Points with Layer Data feature is the unique ability to find the geography and data in which an address sits.
